Heating Under Battened Timber
Floors
for Connection to Time of Use or Domestic Tariff
(UTS2002)
IMPORTANT:
The Electrical Schedule details Electrical Loadings, Thermostat Types and
any other accessories such as Contactors or Time Switches included in the
quotation.
Please refer to Thermostat Specification.
The Electrical Schedule/s together with
this sheet must be passed on to your Electrical Contractor and all
other relevant Trades, before you accept any quotation. This will
enable them to furnish you with quotations for any additional work which
will be required. Failure to do so may result in extra costs being
incurred by you.
General
Any quotation for Under Battened Timber
Floor Installations includes the design, supply and installation/fixing of
all deviflex™ Heating Cables and the supply only of
all Thermostats, Contactors or Time Switches quoted. The areas where the
elements are to be installed must be clean and free from any sharp objects
or debris. The insulation must be installed in accordance with the
insulation information below.
Cabling that passes through joists or that
is installed near the underside of floorboards must conform with
Australian Standards Clause AS3.20.3.4. Our designs have allowed for up to
20mm of timber/flooring material, with floor timbers or battens being
spaced at 450mm or 600mm centres. (See details set out below)

Even though the heating system will be
controlled by a devireg™ combined floor and air sensing
thermostat which incorporates a floor temperature limiter, it is
recommended that you consult with the manufacturer or supplier regarding
product suitability, maximum temperatures, moisture content and fixing
methods. Experience has shown that most types of timber or laminated floor
coverings can be used.

|
|
Under Timber Floor
Heating can be installed on top of the concrete floor between timber
battens |
|

|

|
|

|

|
|
Under Timber Floor
Heating can be also installed from underneath an exposed timber
floor -
please note the number of levels of insulation required for this
type of installation (foils under the cables, as well as around the
cables where they cross the joists, and insulation batts beneath the
foils themselves) |
To be Done by Others
Before cables can be installed, a floor
plan must be supplied confirming the location of any cupboards, wardrobes
or built-in furniture, and any floor level heating or cooling ducts etc.
We will also require information regarding the thickness, spacing and
direction of all timbers or battens that the timber/flooring material will
be fixed to.
To allow for the proper installation of the
heating cables, the builder/owner should ensure that prior to installation
the relevant procedure listed below is carried out:-
For battened timber floors over concrete: a gap of at least 50mm
should be left at each end of the battens, this is to allow for the cable
to pass between the battens.
For installations between timber joists: A 30mm x hole should be
made (50mm below the underside of the timber floor), one at each end of
the joists, to allow for the cable to pass between the joists.
Insulation
Supply and installation of insulation is
not included in our quotation. A Minimum of 'R1.5' Foil
Backed Insulation Batts is recommended below the heating system. The
batts must be laid, foil side up and in full contact with the deviflex
cables - there should be no air gaps below or to the sides. If this is
impractical due to height restrictions with battened floors, the use of a
Foil Backed Blanket similar or superior to 'Sarking' should be laid
directly onto the floor surface (foil side upwards), as above.
Electrical
All Thermostats, Contactors or Time
Switches quoted are supplied only, it is the responsibility
of the Site Electrician to install and connect them. Contactors are
supplied for any zone where individual loads are greater then the current
carrying capacity of the Thermostat, (see Thermostat
Specifications).
Full electrical details are set out in the Electrical Schedule supplied.
Important - Please Note! - Two
empty conduits must be installed by others as follows:-
- For 'Cold Tails' one 20mm
(minimum) empty conduit from the top of the void under the Timber
floor to switch or thermostat position with a draw wire, must be
provided for the 'cold tails'.
- If more than One heating element
is specified per zone, a separate empty 20mm conduit must be provide
for each additional element. Please refer to the Electrical Schedule.
See notes above )
|

|
|
Notice that for each
set of Cold Tails (each heating element) an extra conduit has been
installed. Also note that the sensor probe conduit is installed
between a cable loop. |
- For Sensor Probes a separate
empty 10mm-16mm conduit must be installed for the remote sensor
probes. This conduit will pass from the thermostat position down the
wall, with a wide radius bend into the void of the Timber Floor. If
possible the conduit will be situated up to 2m in from the wall, the conduit
end must always be accessible, this is to allow for the sensor probe
to be inserted or removed for servicing etc. For further information
regarding the sensor probes see Thermostat
Specifications.
- (The Site Electrical Contractor must
insert the sensor probe, (which is located in the Thermostat box) into
this conduit. The sensor must then be connected to the Thermostat.)
- All heating systems must be
connected to a 30 mA Residual Current Device.
- Thermostat locations should be supplied
in writing, no less than 10 days before installation. If these are not
received in time, we will position the cold tails at our discretion.
If re-location of any cold tails is required, this would be done on a 'do
and charge' basis only. A written work order confirming payment
details is required prior to commencement of any work.
